Covenant of Conscience

October 9, 2011

Dear Memorial Family,

On the front of our bulletin, we proudly declare our welcoming statement. It says:
Memorial United Methodist Church strives to be an inclusive community of Christians responding to the Gospel call of Jesus Christ. We welcome and respect persons of every race, ethnicity, national origin, physical or mental ability, gender, family status, sexual identity and orientation, age, theology, and economic circumstance. We affirm that all persons are individuals of sacred worth.

In keeping with our welcoming statement, the elected leaders of Memorial’s Administrative Council voted on September 27, 2011 to join six other congregations in signing the Covenant of Conscience. Memorial UMC has many individual lay and clergy members who have signed.  The Administrative Council prayerfully voted to sign this Covenant on behalf of the congregation.  Strong support for the Covenant has been shown by the significant number of our members have already taken the step to sign, and we felt signing as a congregation was a natural step forward.

The covenant asks this of the congregations who sign it:
We, United Methodist congregations, refuse to discriminate in the sacraments and rituals provided to our members and pledge the full and equal use of our facilities as we welcome and celebrate equally all couples and the families they may choose to create.

We encourage you to read the full covenant located here: http://www.mindny.org/mind-initiatives/marriage-initiative/covenant-of-conscience/

We are a congregation with much love to share. We embody the United Methodist advertising slogan: Open Hearts, Open Minds and Open Doors.  This is one more example of our love for all of God’s Children.

We invite you to join us as we worship and celebrate with the more than 800 clergy and lay signers at a special Covenanting Service, October 16th at 4:00PM to be held at Asbury Crestwood UMC (167 Scarsdale Road, Tuckahoe, NY).

In Peace,
Administrative Council

This Sunday's Engage

Dr. Mahjabeen Hassan Addresses Engage on Sunday September 11, 2011 (after worship and coffe hour)
Dr. Mahjabeen Hassan, a well-known plastic surgeon in the Westchester area has been a featured speaker on interfaith topics in a post-9/11 world. She came to the U.S in 1977 after completing medical school in Pakistan. In her words, her profession gives her a unique window into the commonalities between all people. “I take up the skin and look inside. I see that we truly are all the same. It’s in the mind that we are different. I believe you can have multiple paths to (God). We have different religions but we are talking about the same thing.”
Dr. Hassan will share her reflections about how 9/11 has changed her thinking and her vision in moving forward. She will also speak about what we as a community can do to address the rise of Islamophobia. As a devoted member of AMWA, she will tell us about the changes that are taking place within the Muslim community.
Please join us. This is a very significant event.
